There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust!
Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after. These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.
There are also plans for a digital transformation, new models of care and a multi-storey car park. As well as this, the trust – which won the UK Best Employer Award (Nursing Times 2019) – is applying for teaching hospital status in recognition of its wide and well-renowned role in educating doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
This is an exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, as there are major changes in the near future. The Trust has been awarded government funding for a new acute hospital to be built at the Watford site, and the planning process is underway.
We are also renovating operation theatres on Watford site with an addition of one new theatre. The office accommodation is being refurbished. This project has already started and will take over one year to finish. There are plans to refurbish theatres at SACH(St Albans City Hospital).
We are a friendly dynamic department of 33 consultants, 20 speciality grade doctors, and approximately 20 trainees. We are soon to relocate to a newly purpose-built anaesthetic department with multiple rooms dedicated for administrative work and teaching.
There are 3 posts and the successful applicants will join a team of 32 Consultants, 20 Specialist Grade, and 20 Trainee anaesthetists
Main duties of the job
This post is for a full time Consultant Anaesthetist for the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust with an interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia.
Duties will be at Watford General Hospital and St Albans City Hospital.
Opportunities for development in areas such as perioperative medicine, regional anaesthesia, and preoperative assessment exist and the successful candidate is encouraged to develop a special interest.
The posts all contain Flexible Sessions where the post holders will be required to cover any sessions within their competency. These are useful for the department in introducing flexibility into Consultant working and are useful for the individual in that they allow skills to be retained in a wider range of sub-specialities than would be in a fixed job plan. This will include paediatric anaesthetic sessions in order to allow participation in the general on call rota.
Working for our organisation
West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is an acute trust providing hospital services to over 500,000 people living in Hertfordshire and north London. It has three hospitals (Watford General, St Albans City Hospital and Hemel Hempstead Hospital). The trust also manages an outpatient physiotherapy unit at Abbotts Langley. The Watford site is by far the biggest and is the focus for the trust’s emergency and specialised care. The trust provides a range of more specialist services to a wider population, serving residents of north London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and east Hertfordshire.
We employ around 5,000 staff and over the course of a year treat nearly a million people, including 150,900 people attending our emergency services, nearly half a million via outpatient clinics and deliver about 4,600 babies.
West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Substantive Consultant Posts in Anaesthetist.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Junior medical staff support
The department has about thirty middle grade anaesthetists. Some of these are specialist anaesthetists and about fifteen are in training grades. The CT1 and CT2 anaesthetists come from the East of England School of Anaesthesia. Higher trainees are from the Imperial School of Anaesthesia.
There are monthly departmental meetings. In addition there are a number of lead roles which we would encourage all consultants to take on. There are Trust wide lead and managerial roles which are advertised amongst the consultant body.
Clinical Audit and Governance
There is a monthly clinical governance program which two of the consultants organise. Local Audits, research and other presentations make this a very useful session.
This is done annually and monitored by the Trust. Full revalidation is in place. The responsible officer is the Medical Director, and the process is managed using the Premier IT system.
Continuing Professional Development
The normal thirty days study leave in three years is allowed.
There is office space at SACH and WGH with computer points and internet access.
