Job overview

Full or part time applicants are invited to apply for Consultant posts in Diabetes, Endocrinology Medicine based at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The position will be cross cover both at Watford General and Hemal Hempstead General Hospital to support the delivery of a comprehensive subspecialty.

Once successful you will be joining a team of 8 consultants already providing an extensive Inpatient, outpatient and community service. and will include Young Adults, Diabetic Foot, Insulin Pump, Antenatal Care, Renal and Mental Health. Community

West Hertfordshire Hospital NHS Trust will be working collaboratively with Community and Primary care partners to implement a new Integrated Diabetes Service.

Main duties of the job

Successful applicants will work as part of the West Hertfordshire Diabetes, Endocrinology team, close working with consultant colleagues and community providers in West Hertfordshire is a priority, to build upon and strengthen the integrated approach to the delivery of Diabetic and Endocrinology care.

Successful applicants will also be expected to contribute to the Wards, General Medicine on call rota (approximately 1 in 17).and the weekend on call rota.

When on-call during the week, the Physician of the Day (POD) is on-call from 17.00 to 20.00 Colleagues embarking on a first consultant appointment will be offered (and encouraged) to work with an experienced colleague who will provide support and mentoring as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will be based at WGH and in conjunction with Dr Kong Dr Galliford, Dr Kehinde, Dr Kehinde, Dr Ostberg, Dr Kostoula, Dr Pokrajac provide a highly effective Diabetes, Endocrine service for patients, local General Medical Practitioners, and hospital colleagues. There is provision within the department for new colleagues to be supported by an existing consultant within the department for at least one year to provide appropriate mentoring. We believe this will facilitate full integration into both the Diabetes Endocrinology service as well as the wider medical division.

There are weekly consultants meetings and monthly Departmental and Clinical Governance Meetings between the Watford and Hemel/  

St. Albans. The appointee is expected to take an active role in these aspects of his/her work and the team job plans provide for this commitment.

Specific targets for the department include the development of Community Service MDFT.

The appointee may also be expected to share the responsibility for the provision of a fast and effective Endocrine cancer service. This includes the requirement to see patients within two weeks of referral, assist in the investigation of case and to participate in multi-disciplinary meetings for proven cases.

In-patient diabetes, endocrine services are based on the acute site at Watford General Hospital. Together with consultant colleagues you will contribute to providing inpatient consultation to patients admitted to the Acute Admissions Unit and specialty referrals within the hospital
