Job overview
West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Substantive Consultant Stroke Physician. This post is a replacement post for a Consultant colleague who has recently retired.
The post will be primarily based at Watford General Hospital.
The post holder will join a Watford General Hospital team of three Substantive Stroke consultants and be part of the larger medicine for the Elderly department.
The appointee will provide 10.5 PA of inpatient and outpatient services, including support of the thrombolysis service, provision of ward rounds on the hyper-acute and acute Stroke Unit and participation in Stroke follow up and TIA clinics.

The post holder will take part in a rotating team job plan in partnership with all the Stroke Consultants at Watford Hospital.

The Watford site is by far the biggest and is the focus for the trust’s emergency and specialised care. The trust provides a range of more specialist services to a wider population, serving residents of north London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and east Hertfordshire.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Stroke service at Watford hospital provides thrombolysis 24 hours, seven days a week in conjunction with East of England Telemedicine Service (out of hours). The thrombolysis service within normal working hours is provided by the local Stroke Consultant team.
The out of hour’s telemedicine service is a regional service supported by 11 Stroke Consultants and covers 7 Hospitals within the East of England.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Thrombolysis rota within normal working hours. There is an expectation that the local out of hours on call thrombolysis service will eventually be provided by the Watford Stroke Consultant team.
We have facility for multi modal imaging with CT angiography and CT perfusion. There is an established pathway that involves rapid assessment in A&E by Stroke Clinical Nurse Specialists who review patients triaged by the ambulance service or the A&E team. There are excellent working relationships with the ambulance service, the ED department and radiology.
We have a close working relationship with Charing Cross Hospital who provide a 24/7 thrombectomy service.
We provide daily TIA clinics and regular Stroke follow-up clinics. The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the provision of a 7 day service as part of a weekend rota i.e. a 3 hour session on a Saturday or a Sunday. The consultant is not expected to be present on site outside of these sessions.
