We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and experienced Occupational Therapist to work within our Surgical/Orthopaedic Team based at Watford General Hospital and occasional cover into St Albans Hospital.

The Therapy service at Watford General Hospital is expanding with lots of new and exciting service developments. You will clinically manage a case load and assist with the development of the occupational therapy service provided in this area, working alongside 3 static Band 6 OT’s, 2 rotational band 5 OT’s and assistant staff.

The post includes:

1. Trauma Orthopaedics – working with the MDT to facilitate the rehabilitation and supported discharge of trauma orthopaedic patients. We are one of the tenth busiest trauma units in the country. Therefore, you will be exposed to various and stimulating cases from head injuries, poly-trauma to spinal cord injuries. We are very fortunate to have a trauma coordinator team, who consist of a physiotherapist and occupational therapist.

They are very approachable and supportive. You will also, be part of development of a head injury pathway.

2. Elective Orthopaedics (Across two sites within West Herts) – working with a rehabilitation team of OT’s, physiotherapists and support workers to manage a caseload of elective orthopaedic patients, including enhanced recovery patients.

3. Surgical – working across surgical wards in the acute hospital setting to provide assessment and intervention to patients with a variety of presentations including lower limb amputees.

The development of an OT service at the outpatient amputee clinic. The rehabilitation team works closely with the orthopaedic surgeons, a dedicated ortho-geriatrician, social workers and discharge co-ordinators to facilitate smooth and timely discharge of patients. Are you enthusiastic and passionate?

Do you have Band 6 experience in working with people recovering post surgery (Abdominal, Amputees and Orthopaedic, Head injuries, Spinal cord injuries)? Are you confident in your clinical skills, able to offer the appropriate advice and support on complex cases/discharge planning to more junior members of the team? Do you have excellent communication skills, time management skills, a mature and tactful approach to problem solving, and effective interpersonal and leadership skills? These are all pre-requisites in working effectively within this role. Watford General Hospital is part of the North West London Trauma Network, with close links with major trauma centres within London. This offers the opportunity to attend quarterly conferences to discuss development in both treatment techniques and new initiatives being rolled out.

WGH also has close links with the Royal Free Hospital Trust, offering new and exciting clinical partnership opportunities. We are aiming to have an established OT service within the outpatient amputee service to enhance the journey from amputation to prosthetic user for lower limb amputees. You will be supported by our Band 7 Occupational Therapy tier through a well-established supervision and appraisal process along with support from a Therapy Team Lead.

We also offer regular In-Service training opportunities. We are very proactive with our staff development. There are also opportunities for course funding both externally and through the department’s links with the University of Hertfordshire. This is a great opportunity to join a friendly, dedicated inpatient therapy team.

The department runs a 7 day working service and this post would be included in that rota (frequency of 1:6 weekends) with enhanced pay and rest days in the following week. Watford General itself is a busy district general hospital but is forward thinking as to how best to develop services to benefit the patients care. It is well situated for access to the main motorways (M25 and M1) which will improve even further with the soon to be opened link road from M1 to Watford Hospital.

The town centre has a wide range of shops and restraunts but it is also surrounded by some beautiful countryside and open spaces.

We are happy to receive full time and part time hours applications.
